Can an employer of a person to stop speaking Spanish and only speak English?
Yesterday my boss told the new secretary to stop talking Spanish, while she was talking to a coworker who came to welcome him aboard. She is Mexican and the boss is a man waving white flags-type. HE DOES NOT own the company, however.
The answer to your question depends entirely on the state where this occurred and circumstances when it happened. It is well in California law that an employer may not restrict the use of a mother-tongue at rest, but when there is a legitimate business during working hours, the court does not restrict the actions of the company.
