What is the energy consumption of an AC induction motor 370 watts when running under load?
If an induction motor is rated at 0.5HP and 370 W at 220 V single phase, it is right at the start or when it is operating under load. In this case it is a submersible pump designed for water operation of continuous service in a power curve with a maximum flow of 400Litres/min and maximum dynamic load of 14.5 meters. Apart from the general interests of my main reason is that I have an idea of the operating costs of operation of this pump to supply my waterfall pond on a 24/7/365 basis.
Let's clear up the confusion. The nameplate 0.5HP 370W and express the mechanical power (or drive shaft) that the electric motor to deliver load when operating at rated voltage namplate input frequency and output speed. From Wikipedia: "The identification plates in electric motors show its power, not its input power. "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsepower Since HP is defined as a 746W, we have: x = 746W/HP 0.5HP 373W or 370W rounded Thus, 0.5HP 370W and both refer to the same parameter, the engine power output. No engine is 100% efficient, so the input power is greater than the power output. Single-phase Engines of small power (<1 HP, <746W) have efficienies poor. For example, this Leeson 1/2HP motor has an efficiency rating of 61% to 100% load and lower efficiency in reducing the load (Click on the "Performance" tab): http://www.baymotorwinding.com/inventory/listings/details/index/ In staticcfm/adnum/1041926000.htm For submersible pumps for wells, motor efficiencies are often even lower for a given engine size. May be due to the restriction that the engine has to fit into a small diameter well casing. It could also be due to the automaker can get away with producing a low-efficiency motor because the liquid in which the motor is immersed conducted away from the residual heat. And submersible motors tend to be exempt from the requirements of performance. It is hard to find posted an efficiency rating for submersible motors. So do not be a surprise if a submersible motor was about 50% efficiency. To answer your question, if the engine to operate at full load for a year, would spend the next input power (50% efficiency): 373W / 0.50eff 1kW/1000W x = x 8760hr/yr 6535 kWh / year in the U.S., a typical rate would be $ 0.13/kWh. The cost would be: 6535 kWh / year x $ 0.13/kWh = U.S. $ It may 850/yr the pump and the engine is not running at full load, in which case the cost would be lower. A pump curve (supplied by the manufacturer) would be very useful in predicting the required power. Hope that helps.
